Root Canal Therapy
If you have a toothache, sensitivity to hot or cold, and/or worsening discomfort at night, you may have nerve damage in your tooth. The nerve space inside a tooth can be a breeding ground for bacteria to persist because the body’s defense mechanisms cannot effectively access this space. When this occurs, your body can at best ward off the infection caused by the bacteria, and at worst allow the bacterial infection to overwhelm its defense mechanisms causing pain and swelling. If neglected, a large abscess can form, leading to severe consequences including jaw bone destruction, airway constriction, sinus infection, etc.
The root canal treatment process involves the removal of bacteria, nerve tissue, and bacterial toxins from the inner space of the tooth. Afterward, the space is cleansed, filled in, and sealed. This helps minimize the possibility of bacteria recolonizing the tooth.
